 MISSION

Project Description

This project leverages the physical platform developed by last year’s “Solar Shade” project, which included the mechanical build of an umbrella covered with four solar panels and a solar charge controller.

Project Goal

Our project aims to replace the commercial solar charge controller with a custom built one and study changes in efficiency.

Project Phases
  • Benchmarking.

  • Prototyping.

  • System Integration.

  • Conference Paper.

SERVICES

ABOUT

Optimizing the harvest of solar energy from photovoltaic (PV) panels can be accomplished using Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technology. However most commercially available solar charge controllers that utilize MPPT come with only one input channel.

A multiple PV panel system using such a product would have the panels connected in parallel or series to accommodate the single input channel. Interference between the panels will throttle the conversion of harvested solar energy.

This project investigates multi-channel solar power converters for efficiency and cost-effectiveness over traditional single-channel controllers.
